Alvaro Castagnet
Alvaro Castagnet

Uruguayan-born internationally acclaimed master watercolourist Alvaro Castagnet, winner of the American Watercolour Society’s prestigious “High Winds” award and gold medal, specializes in capturing the fleeting luminosity of light contrasted to darks in the traditional chiaroscuro manner.

His subjects range from intimate café scenes and their implied small dramas, to people going about their daily lives swallowed up by the monumental atmosphere and spirit of place, synchronicity and the incandescent beauty of the moment, and the ordinary painted in an extraordinary way.

Alvaro’s passionate pictorial universe is the real world reflected, enhanced and interpreted in exacting watercolour technique embracing abstracted linearity, and recorded as a diary of the living souls of the people and their shadows passing through these cities, restaurants, plaza’s and docks and crisscrossing over each other’s private lives as snippets and remembrances, to form a complex painterly tapestry –at once attractive and revealing.

Using a restrained colour palette, rigorous drawing skill, loose brush work and slick pigment application his pictures manifest as a tour de force of observation, spontaneity and classical artistic knowledge.

Alvaro Castagnet is the winner numerous esteemed awards both national and internationally.
